Webb Simpson held on to win the US Open title by one shot from 2010 champion Graeme McDowell on a dramatic final day in San Francisco.

However, Jim Furyk admitted he only had himself to blame after seeing his hopes of a second US Open title evaporate.

Furyk began the last round tied for the lead with Northern Ireland's McDowell but struggled to a four-over 74 to finish two shots behind surprise winner Simpson.

The 2003 champion, who failed to make a single birdie all day, was still level with Simpson with three holes to play before two costly bogeys at the 16th and 18th ended his challenge for good.

Furyk said: "I don't know how to put that one into words. I had my opportunities and my chances and it was right there. It was my tournament to win... and I wasn't able to do so.

"I really felt like I had a lot of confidence in myself and a lot of belief. When you feel like you're going to win the golf tournament and you don't, it's that much more disappointing."

Furyk's poor final day left him in a tie for fourth place and means he is still searching for his second Major title after a series of near misses.

Having come joint-second at the US Open in 2006 and 2007 and equal fifth at the 2008 Open Championship, he knows that he could be running out of opportunities to add to his Grand Slam tally of victories.

Furyk added: "Two years ago I was the Player of the Year in the United States. I played poorly last year, and all of a sudden I'm middle-aged.

"I think I have a few more good years and I would like to get another opportunity. Whether or not that happens again in a major championship, I don't know."
