Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has revealed Roberto Martinez is in talks with Liverpool's owners in the United States.

Whelan has previously given his manager permission to speak to Liverpool regarding the managerial vacancy at Anfield and it seems negotiations are underway.

Martinez is now 1.72 to become the next Liverpool manager following the sacking of Kenny Dalglish, while former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is at 7.00 and Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers, despite turning down the chance to talk to the club last week, can be backed at 9.00.

Whelan is hoping Martinez will reject the chance to move on but admits he has plans in place to replace the Spaniard should he choose to leave the DW Stadium.

"Hopefully he will stay with Wigan, but if not good luck to him," Whelan told Sky Sports.

"I have asked Roberto to make his mind up as quickly as possible, and if we do lose him I will move very quickly to appoint a successor.

"I have got ideas, but hopefully he will stay with us."

He added: "We have to wait and see what they offer Roberto and what kind of control he has, because Roberto likes total control.

"If he doesn't get that I don't think he will take the job."
