Lee Westwood claimed a one-shot lead going into the second round of The Masters, matching his best score at Augusta National.

The world number three, who is 6/5 to end the tournament as the top GB and Ireland player, carded a five-under-par as he aims to win his first major, one shot ahead of Louis Oosthuizen and Peter Hanson.

All the talk ahead of the opening day was of Rory McIlroy, who is 11/8 to be the top GB and Ireland player, and Tiger Woods, who is 11/4 to finish as the top American. McIlroy was happy to record a 71, recovering from a double bogey to finish with two birdies, while Woods finished with 72 after back-to-back bogeys.

"This is my 13th time here," said Westwood, who was runner-up to Phil Mickelson two years ago.

"I've learnt the course and feel comfortable on it. That eradicates a lot of the tension.

"My ball-striking was very good - it has been all year. Majors are my primary focus and this was a long time coming around after the USPGA."

McIlroy, aiming to eradicate the memory of his collapse last year when he lost a four-shot lead, was relieved to finish under-par.

"I'm a lot more pleased coming off the golf course than if I had finished par and to come off under-par is pleasing," said the 22-year-old.

"My perseverance and patience paid off and it was nice to finish as I did, but I'm surprised someone didn't go lower than five today."
