Lancaster to be handed England job

Stuart Lancaster is set to be named as England's permanent head coach after impressing during the recent Six Nations campaign.

Lancaster took the reins on an interim basis after the resignation of Martin Johnson and oversaw a second-place finish in the Six Nations, guiding England to three away wins in the tournament as well as a 30-9 win at Twickenham against Ireland.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) are to confirm the appointment at a press conference on Thursday afternoon, with the 42-year-old set to be handed a four-year contract which will take in the 2015 World Cup. England are 13/2 to win that tournament, while Australia are 11/2 and New Zealand are 11/8.

The former Leeds boss made an impact on the squad immediately after his interim appointment, bringing in a number of young players and instilling pride in the jersey after the disappointment of the World Cup.

He has seen off the challenge of Nick Mallett, Jake White and John Kirwan and will now need to confirm the set-up of his coaching team, with Andy Farrell, who worked alongside him during the Six Nations, still employed by Saracens.
