Darren Helm hit his sixth of the year to give the Detroit Red Wings the victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks at the Joe Louis Arena.

Helm was assisted by Drew Miller who had earlier given the Red Wings a 2-0 lead midway through the second, before Logan Couture was given credit for a goal on the power play to pull San Jose within one after the puck bounced about before going in off a Detroit player in a goalmouth scramble. Henrik Zetterberg opened the scoring for Detroit in the first with a back hand attempt that beat Antti Niemi in the San Jose net.

The Red Wings moved five points ahead of the Blues in the Central division after the Chicago Blackhawks knocked off St. Louis 3-1 at the United Center. Duncan Keith, Dave Bolland and Marian Hossa all scored in the third period to give Chicago its third consecutive victory after Andy McDonald had opened the scoring for St. Louis with less than a minute to go in the first.

In the NHL on Tuesday the Washington Capitals take on the Carolina Hurricanes, with the Capitals 3.15 to win in the puck line (-1.5), while Carolina can be backed at 1.38 (+1.5).
