Manchester United striker Michael Owen has been ruled out for around six weeks by a thigh injury picked up during the Champions League win over Otelul Galati.

The 31-year-old former England international lasted just over ten minutes of the 2-0 Old Trafford victory just under two weeks ago, being injured during the build-up to Antonio Valencia's opening goal.

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson had hoped to see Owen back in action in the very near future, but the former Liverpool ace will now be sidelined for much of the remainder of the year.

A short statement from United confirmed: "Michael has a thigh muscle injury and will be out for six weeks or so."

United are 15/8 to retain their Premier League title this season and 9/1 to triumph in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Owen's United team-mate Javier Hernandez says he is content to fight for a regular starting spot, with competition for places in attack having become more fierce due to the emergence of Danny Welbeck.

"You look around on the training pitch and there are almost 30 players, but only 11 can start a game so it's tough," Hernandez told Inside United.

"It's not a problem. I've come to learn that there will always be competition at any club. You'll always have disappointments - it helps you improve."

Hernandez has scored four times in the league so far this season and is 16/1 to be the Premier League's top-scorer this term.
