Jim Furyk became the fourth successive champion to fail to defend his FedEx Cup title after a poor finish to the BMW Championship.

Furyk could only manage a five-over-par 76 in his final round at Cog Hill to finish on level par and outside the top 30 places needed to qualify for the FedEx Cup play-off climax at the Tour Championship.

While England's Justin Rose celebrated one of the biggest victories of his career as he survived some nervy moments to finish two shots clear of the field, Furyk joined Tiger Woods (2008 and 2010) and Vijay Singh (2009) in failing to defend the crown.

And the American admitted that he had just not played well enough to earn a place in the final event of the play-off series after getting off to a bad start on Sunday.

Furyk said: "Playing poorly leaves a sour taste. I got off to a bad start. I three-putted No. 2 and hit a few drives that were off the golf course. By the time I got things calmed down, it was too late."

Furyk will not be the only big name missing from the elite field which takes its place at the Tour Championship in search of the $10million first prize.

Sergio Garcia also failed to qualify for the event at East Lake Golf Club and the Spaniard revealed he will now take a short break from golf after slipping out of contention in his final round at Cog Hill.

Garcia dropped six shots on his back nine as he failed to deal with the persistent rain and told Sky Sports: "I feel very tired and need a break.

"I have played a lot of golf this year and I'm looking forward to enjoying a holiday."
