Andy Murray was relieved to avoid another five-set thriller after defeating Feliciano Lopez in straight sets to reach the last 16 of the US Open.

Murray has never lost to Lopez and came through 6-1 6-4 6-2 to set up a fourth-round meeting on Tuesday with American wildcard Donald Young, who defeated Murray in Indian Wells in March.

The British number one was dominant throughout against Lopez and was pleased to avoid another long battle after having to come back from two sets down against Robin Haase in the second round.

"It was better. They were very tough conditions at the start as well. It was pretty windy. I had to get the feet going early," he said.

"When you can get an early break it can kind of set the tone for the rest of the match. Tonight that was the case.

"And it was important because obviously, after having a long match the other day, especially playing late at night, if you don't have to play a three or four-hour match (it's much better) because it's not that easy to recover."

Murray will now aim to avoid another shock result against Young, who defeated 24th seed Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets on Sunday.

He admitted: "It's a big match for me because of what happened earlier in the year but energy-wise, I'll be feeling good going into that one for hopefully a long second week."
